Volume goes automatically to 0 on my Samsung LCD TV

Jan 24, 2009 9:34PM PST

Hi,

I have a Samsung LA32M51BS LCD TV. The last few days something strange is happening to the TV: When I turn on the TV, the volume is at 0. If I try ty turn up the colume, nothing happens (though the blue colored light on the TV is flashing). If I try to turn up the volume by pressing the + button on the TV itself, the volume goes up, but as soon as I release the button, the sound goes down to 0 again! I tried to take the batteries out of the remote to see if it's the remote that's messing up, but it didn't help. Does anyone know what could be the cause of this problem? Someone experienced the same?

Absolutely Worked!!!! Thank you.

My volume was actually going from 0 to 100 and then randomly from 100 to 0. This was a great and easy fix (even though I couldn't find a flash light and instead had to use candle light), I opened the back panel and unplugged the connection on the side next to the controls and viola. Thank you so much.

I was have the some problem with volume bar on the screen. I solved on easy way, I was remove rear plastic corner, then I was disconnected the small board for buttons on side and then I was close the tv. The problem is fixed, everything is normal like before the problem. Than you!

You rock! Opened up the back panel - couldn't take the whole panel off but managed to get access to the side controls. I found the wires (red and white) leading up the side to the controls. I followed the wires and saw a white plastic clip. Released the clip and replaced the panel. Problem solved.
Thank you!

Volume going to zero automatically and Remote is not working
Mar 27, 2011 12:47AM PDT

I had the same problem today for my Samsung LCD 32 inch.
And I solved it on my own. Removed the back panel. Removed the side panel buttons part. Took out the side panel motherboard and corrected the press buttons. Thats all..Now both side panel buttons and remote is working fine. No issues with volume control as well.

The problem is due to side panel buttons. Volume (-) button got always pressed because of metal part inside the panel. So no other buttons and remote were working as expected.

Hi,

My TV is having the same issue. Could you please tell me how to take out the side panel motherboard and correct the buttons. I has opened the back panel, but I'm afraid that removing the motherboard may affect other parts of the TV. I really appreciate for your help.

Thank you in advance.

This is not a TV Repair Forum. It's more of a reach out effort for Samsung. As makers don't have a repair forum which is what you are looking for, an answer will have to come from others that do such repairs.

Be sure to find and post in repair forums. I think AVSFORUM (see google) has been noted a few times.

Hi there,

The issue is the side panel controls.
You should be able to see the wire where it plugs into the button
control board. On my LN40A500 this wire is hardwired at the IR interface
board and runs over to the right side of the TV to the button control
board. Gently disconnect it there. This worked for me and others in this
forum. BTW, the Mother Board that someone else referred to is probably
the AV board or the power supply board. The AV board is less than $50
(US) and the power supply board is right about $100 (US). Someone quoted
$350 for a new mother board and advised to just buy another TV. I have
worked on TVs since the middle 70's and my Samsung is one of the better
designs that I have seen.

Good luck,

Joe

I have been having the same issue as everyone above. I did not want to spend the money on a service call or buy a new TV as this one is only 4 years old. If I can fix it anyone can. My biggest issue was taking the back off the the TV but once I mastered that screwdriver I was able to disconnect that wire and whala it works! I am not one bit savy at this stuff and I am female and blonde so their is hope for anyone who thinks they cannot figure it out. Thanks Joe you saved me a bunch of money!

The Solution Works. Did More, Thanks Joe
Jan 22, 2016 11:43PM PST

Joe,

The solution given by you still works. I read your 2012 post and in 2016 when I faced the issue with my Samsung TV Model No. LA32S71BX/XTL, it worked.

After removing the back panel to access the side control buttons,
In fact I went a step ahead and actually opened the side control unit post disconnecting the 4 wire jumper (3 white, 1 blue) which on my model is separate for this section which controls, Menu, Source, Volume Up/Down and Channel Up/Down buttons only.

This specific part has a plastic buttons unit which we see on the outside and a Circuit Board which houses the buttons. These circuit board buttons are pressed when we use any of the buttons from the side panel, with the help of these plastic buttons. These plastic buttons are just push buttons and do not house any circuits on them. Hence post removing this part from the main TV, I unlocked the circuit board from these buttons panels (6 plastic locks that need to be released very carefully and gently). Post that I cleaned the Button Tops that are soldered on to the circuit board with a cleaning fluid. My TV is 9 yrs old and there was too much dust in this circuit part between the buttons and the circuit boards, this could probably be the one causing the Volume to go down on its own. After cleaning it thoroughly I ensured that the part dries up completely and then I reattached the plastic button panel to the circuit board. I reconnected back the board with the jumper cable, reattached to the TV unit and did a test run, it worked perfectly !

So while 1 option as mentioned by you is to disconnect the side panel buttons and only use the Remote Control for these functions.

The Option 2 is to clean the specific part with a little careful handling, as it does work perfectly after it. Hence getting to use the side panel and the remote, as originally designed.

Needless to say that the Option 2 needs careful handling and should be done at your own risks, Option 1 is quick and simple.

Thanks again Joe, I had nearly researched buying a new LED FHD, but your post has given the old LCD some more life now.

Worked for me
Jan 11, 2012 5:46PM PST

I have the same problem with my Samsung LN40A550.The solution that worked for me is below and I did it myself. It is a simple solution and although I am an electronics repair technician, this is my own personal unit and the first Samsung TV that I have worked on. I downloaded the service manual online and as a technician I would recommend that anyone that plans to attempt their own repairs do the same. The unit that I have is well designed and is very easy to work on. If you are not sure of your electronic repair skills I would strongly recommend having the repairs done by an experienced technician.

My fix for now is below;

I have the problem isolated for now. I disconnected the side panel controls (Samsung part # BN41-00989A) and reassembled the TV. I reconnected all of my devices (PC, PC DVI-HDMI1, Blu-Ray-HDMI3, Cable Box-HDMI2) and ran the unit for about 9 hours using all of the input devices for at least 1.5 hours each without any problems.I visually inspected the IR Interface board (Samsung Part # BN41-00990A), the side panel control board (Samsung part # BN41-00989A), and all of the connected cables. Nothing unusual stood out.

This unit is wall mounted and the right side is about 8" directly above a Scientific Atlanta HDTV cable box and has been for almost 3 years. I can't rule out interference as the culprit but given the history it is not my first suspect.

Since the side panel board is less than $20 (US) I am going to replace it. The IR interface board is also less than $20 (US) and I am going to replace it as well. I am going to replace them individually to see if I can more accurately isolate the problem and I will report my results here. For now though, disconnecting the side panel board and just using the remote seems to have solved the problem temporarily.

Good Luck,

Joe

How does this work, if you disconnect the lead to the side panel then aren't you disconnecting the ability to use the remote control completely?

No, do not cut any wires
Jan 19, 2012 4:58PM PST

Hi, the board on the side of my TV has wires going to it that come from the IR board. Disconnecting them from the button control board at the connector had no effect on the remote control functions at all. It disabled my side controls of course but my problem went away. I have full control of the TV via my remote. I simply unplugged the wire connector from the button control board. There was no need to cut any wires.

I hope this helps,

Joe

No, don't cut the wires
Jan 20, 2012 6:05PM PST

Ok, so if you unplug it then still how does the remote control work, as isn't the remote control infrared link part of that side control panel?

- Collapse -
No
Jan 20, 2012 9:51PM PST

Hi again,

From the IR (remote control board) there is a wire that goes over to the button control board. Disconnect the wire at the button control board. The IR board will remain functional. DO NOT disconnect from the AV board. Doing so will disable the IR Board, Button Panel board and the Blue power on LED.

Just tried and works great
Jul 19, 2012 10:15AM PDT

Thanks for all your inputs. I am very novice in electronics but was able to do this fairly quickly.

We opened the back panel, found the button panel, removed the glue and unplugged the cable.

It works great with remote now.

Should have tried the contact spray first but its ok..never used those buttons anyways.

If it helps I had the same problem with my Samsung TV LE19B450 where the volume kept turning itself to zero. I followed the instructions and unscrewed the back of the unit, there were two or three wires going into the control unit on the side and I gently removed the blue wire and this solved the problem completely.
