Volume controll, so simple

My desktop, Dell Optiplex GX280, XP Home Edition,2.79ghz and 1gmb. Everything works fine except that i notice that the speaker/volume icon is not on my task bar. When i try to place the icon on the taskbar, i get this error saying that the volume control program is not installed. I have never encounterd this before and search on Dell support sight is coming up empty. WHERE WOULD I FIND such software????
