volume control

snow leopard likes to disregard my volume setting and always defaults to the middle setting with each startup. is there a way to keep my setting? thanks.

To change this: System Preferences > Sound
Move slider for output volume.

Yes. I've been doing that but my iMac prefs ignores them.
