CNET is no longer publishing detailed while balance or color management system (CMS) settings. Instead, we'll give more general recommendations to get the best picture with more basic settings. Here they are for the Vizio M65-F0.

Contrast: 50
Color: 50
Tint: 0
Sharpness: 0

More Picture menu:

Xtreme Black Engine Plus: Low
Reduce Judder: 0
Reduce Motion Blur: 10
Clear Action: Off
Reduce Signal Noise: Off
Reduce Block Noise: Off
Game Low Latency: Off
Film Mode: On
Color Space: Auto
Gamma: 2.4

Calibration notes: Before any adjustment the P65's Calibrated and Calibrated Dark modes were both highly accurate, but for my dark room I chose Dark. It was a bit brighter than my target 132 nits (40 fL) so I brought the backlight control down a bit.

For adjustments I chose the 2.4 gamma position instead of the default 2.2 for that mode since it measured closer to my gamma BT.1886 target. Color temperature of my review sample was slightly redder than ideal so I tweaked it slightly, and ended up using the 11-point system to brighten up gamma a bit (if you find it too dark, go ahead and use the 2.2 setting instead of 2.4).

Vizio offers three settings for Xtreme Black Engine Plus (local dimming). Medium measured significantly brighter than the default Low in Calibrated Dark, so for SDR I stuck with Low.

HDR Notes: As with past Vizios, Calibrated and Calibrated Dark both showed a very accurate EOTF. As mentioned in the review light output was not that much brighter than the M series, but still very good for both modes at around 860 nits, with no drop-off over time.

Color measurements were solid, with color checker was error decent and similar to the M series. Color gamut was quite a bit better at 94% of DCI-P3 (compared to the M at 82%), in the same ballpark as 2018 competitors including the TCL 6 series and the Sony X900F, which both hit around 95%.

I didn't measure Dolby Vision, just HDR10.

Unlike Samsung or LG sets, you'll have to set the TV's highest-bandwidth HDMI mode -- called Full UHD Color by Vizio -- manually. It's not required for every 4K HDR source, but will be for many.
