Clarification Request
I've never been a fan of Black Friday HDTV deals

Why? Because rarely do they sell the HDTVs which generally have the most highly rated PQ (picture quality).

That said, I prefer Sammy since I have had better post-sales warranty/repair/parts experiences vs Vizio. YMMV. They both mass produce HDTVs, so perhaps it's a matter of which one suits your needs initially (price point to get you in the door). I always feel what happens *after* you buy the HDTV makes the most sense, even if it means spending $500 more. People forget that they keep these devices quite a long time usually, so the extra cost is often moot.

Features and price

I have two Samsungs and bought a Vizio last time around. The Samsungs are OK but I felt that Vizio had the perfect combination of features at a good price but the Samsungs had a set of features of dubious usefulness. I stupidly jammed an optical cable (multiple times!) into the Vizio optical port and broke the port. I confessed to the Vizio guys and, even though it was my fault, they agreed to cover it under warranty with free on-site service. The service was a third party but they were great and fast and easy and swapped out the guts of the TV in under an hour. Due to my good experience, I consider Samsung and Vizio equal. In my mind, Samsung is just another brand, not really worth paying a premium for. The Samsung frame is a bit more sturdy and solid and the picture is probably a little better but I really enjoy the Vizio features.

Both are irksome about their Smart TV policies.

Samsung with their Syncplus and PIA and now Vizio selling you off to 3rd parties (data) mean I worry for both models.

Here? No sale.

Vizios are cheaper. Samsungs are probably better.

I am REALLY happy with my Samsung UN65HU8550 TV. It is over two years old now and still knocks my eyeballs out every time I turn the thing on. It is basically a computer, but it has been totally glitch-free the whole time.

Its performance on native 4K content like Netflix's "Breaking Bat" is genuinely astonishing, and its ability to upconvert lower resolution content -- even things like VHS copies of VHS tapes -- is utterly astonishing. This capability, I believe, sets Samsung apart and above.
