Vista Worth a try?

Oct 4, 2006 12:27AM PDT

Good day all,
I keep getting bombarded with try Vista now. Is it worth it to give the beta a try. My pc has more than enough requirments to run the program. I would really hate to try it and have nothing but problems. Sooo if any of you tech savy gods out there have any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks again for your time.

Don't do it yet....

You do realize the following few points:

1) Vista is an Operating system. This means installing and uninstalling it won't be simple or quick as this is a big piece of software that will somewhat take over your computer in a sense, unless you set up a dual boot which may or may not be a simple option.

2) Vista isn't released yet and is likely to still have at least a few hundred bugs. Last count I heard was around 1400 or so bugs I think that they were working on.

3) If you do install a beta or RC of it, it is time coded to only work for so long. After that it won't work and you'll have to uninstall it. You did know this right?

For those reasons as a start, I don't think I'd put Vista on a computer of mine yet.

Regards,
JB

Good day,
As a novice you sure opened my eyes as to all that is involved in trying the program at this stage. I think I'll stay with what I have now and wait for the reports when it does become a final product for the customers. Thanks for your time and knowledge

Up to you

Look, the Vista you can get is "beta", Sad which pretty much says, it ain't ready yet. You can *PLAY ALL YOU WANT* but the only benefit is you'll know how to fiddle with it when Vista is offically released.

If you do install it then make sure you use "dual boot" mode or use it solo(recommended). Further, any driver or device issues, well.... can you expect a device maker to support an OS not out yet. You're best bet is to have the lastest whatever. Of course forums help, but it's "pitfall cures" meaning, someone else fell into the same pit and worked it out and released info. Most of those glitches should be fixed before release and those that got it should not see similar problems in the offical release(cross-fingers). I learned a long time ago to let the dust settle before diving in but that's me. I got enough problems fixing offical release(s) than to worry about beta issues. Wink

Go on Try it!

Go out and get a spare drive and try it because it is so cool. I love RC1 so much I have made it my main OS. Its as solid as XP and its just so fast and beautiful. You won't believe how quick it loads your favorite applications. I use http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/ BootIt NG to multi boot into Vista or XP if i'm feeling nostalgic. I'd dearly like to report to MS the few problems I've found but the bug repoting software won't work. Go here http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List to check out which software works with it.

Trying Before Buying!
Oct 7, 2006 2:12AM PDT

I firmly beleave in demo's when considering forking
out fairly big bucks on software. I have extra partitions not being used so I backed up XP with the
Norton Ghost & then installed Vista on a spare partition. One more backup of both systems & there's
no harm, no foul. If I need to install new software
or updates I reload XP with the backup before Vista,
back it up again & re-load the copy of XP with Vista
installed when I want to check it out some more. The only thing I see changed in other partions is a $RECYCLE.BIN folder added to the root. Now I can learn
how to use & abuse Vista on main pc without worry.
Give it a shot!
