Vista word file does not open on XP home.

Feb 20, 2009 11:07PM PST

Hi,
I have a PC running XP home. It is quite old so that all the components (hardware) have been changed except the M/B and the processor. I had put on it my old Office Premium 2000. i.e. word, and all the rest instead of buying new Office, when I bought this XP computer some five or six years ago if not more.
Everything works fine and I have not had any problem with it.My XP is regularly up dated as the new updates become available.
I bought my grandson a Vista loaded computer as soon as Vista came on the market. He sent me an email the other day with one of his essays inclosed .

I have not been able to open this essay on my old application software.I can open his (message part of the) message, but not the enclosed essay. When I try to open it, it requires me to put Disc 2 in (recall 2 discs with the Applications in 2000).

Unfortunately I have not been able to locate the required CD.

Is there any way I could open this Vista generated text file, (I assume it was written on Vista word processor and not Microsoft Office) on my XP home PC, which uses the Application suite from 2000?
Will be grateful for advice.
Shafiq

My best guess

My best guess would be that this document your grandson sent you was made with a later version of Word or possibly MS Works.

In either case, I would strongly suggest you getting rid of the rather ancient Office2000 and consider the free alternative of OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) which will have a CONSIDERABLY better chance of opening anything your grandson (or anyone else) throws at you.

It may be an "XPS" Vista document

Vista creates XPS documents, for which you would need a standalone (free) reader for XP. Read this page here, and then click the download link to see if it helps you:
