Vista won't save files

Sep 10, 2007 12:21AM PDT

I've posted this at another Vista forum but nobody knows the answer; hope somebody here can.

I have Vista HP on my laptop. I hate Vista with a passion and this is one of my complaints:

In Windows Explorer, I browse to a small .html file and open it in Notepad; make a minor change and try to "Save." An error message tells me something about not being able to FIND the file. Duh! All I can do is save it with a NEW name, then delete the original and then rename the revised version.

If I then change the NEW file, with a second change, and try to save IT, same problem; "cannot find file..." So now I have to use a SECOND new name etc. etc.

This does not happen all the time; only sporadically.

Any advice out there please?

Sounds like file, directory permission issues.

As you fluent about NTFS directory permissions, ownership, etc?

unable to save files

It probably is permissions so I did go into that and try to change it so I have permission to do anything, anywhere. It is MY home computer. But, maybe I did it wrong; the problem persists.

(I tried to reply earlier but it apparently did not go)

Is it just Notepad?

I encountered a similar problem with Office 2007 running on Vista now and then, though reinstalling Office seemed to correct it. Try Wordpad, Word, WordPerfect, OpenOffice, etc and see if it's just the one program or a wide-spread problem. Second, try saving a new file to a different directory and wait to see if the problem crops up there. Finally, you may want to consider a System Restore back a few days to a time prior to the problem occurring. Unfortunately I don't have a solution, but it would be nice to feel around and see what exactly this stems from.

Let us know how it goes.

OK, I did that

I opened the .html file in WORDpad, made a minor change and tried to save; told me: "The document........ is in use by another application and cannot be accessed." It was, in fact, NOT open in any other application.

I then opened it in NOTEpad, made the change and tried to save it and got the usual message: "Cannot create the D:\........ file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

Well, of course those were correct; I opened it in Win Explor.

I *think* my "permissions" are ok............. any way to be sure I have 100% access to everything? As I said, this is my own, home computer.

Thanks!

Vista won't save files - I feel your pain!

This may not help, but i am having exactly the same problem but rather than trying to open it as the source file from my browser, i am opening it in notepad from my computer. I initially thought it may have been because i had the website open in the browser aswell but it did the same thing even when i closed it. This problem started not long after editing a very small portion of one of the webpages in Frontpage. This is making life hell because it is an assignment for college.
