Vista with Torrents and Internet Connections

Feb 12, 2007 7:25AM PST

I've recently bought a brand new Dell Dimension E521 with Vista pre-installed. I've installed two torrent clients with the same problem while using either or both. When I connect to donload the file with the client and torrent file any other application that requires an internet connection won;t work, for example IE7 or MSN. As soon as I stop or pause the download I can then use the internet as usual. Does anyone know why this is or how to solve my problem? Thanks

You will continue to have problems
Feb 12, 2007 7:28AM PST

with illegal downloads from Torrents. They are mostly used for illegal uploading/downloading of files and SHOULD be blocked.

Not all the time

Not all the time, there is a lot of very good legal documentuaries you can download.

So you are saying

that you are not downloading illegal and copyrighted files?

If that's the case, then you need to give more information on what happens, like any error messages you get, and your system setup, eg your internet connection speed. Have you done a speed test?

MY connection details are:
Feb 13, 2007 1:45AM PST

4mb broadband with NTL via cable modem connected to my PC with a ethernet cable which is the only thing different from my old computer along with vista

connection speed is normal as the test shows:
Speed Down 3342.98 Kbps ( 3.3 Mbps )
Speed Up 374.75 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

so im out of ideas.

A few things to look for:

I don't have a copy of Vista to test on, but I have a couple of ideas that you should look at:

1. Check whether the Windows Firewall is involved. Look at the settings, since the bit torrent uses both inbound and outbound connections.
2. Check whether the Bit Torrent client has linked anything directly to your Internet connection, such as an additional protocol handler. Look at the Advanced Properties for that connection, however that is done in Vista. If there is a handler, it may not be correctly written for Vista and may not be sharing the connection properly with other applications. If the bit torrent client only uses the standard WinSock or WinInet interface it is less likely to be able to affect other applications.
3. Have you used the bandwidth throttling feature of your client (if it has one) to limit the torrent connections to less than half of the maximum available bandwidth (both up and downstream).

Good Luck

Bitcomet

I use Bitcomet without any of those issues. There is a quirk that I've had to install it twice on both my vista machines.

I love you guys that always say you'll get infected with a Virus or Trojan Horse if you use bi torrent. Sure if you don't run anti virus software or firewall you run that risk, but you run the same risk at any web sight if your dumb enough not to have protection.

I download over 200 GB per month and have never been infected. If fact unless your downloading cracks for a program it is rare that you will encounter any Viruses on Bi torrent.
