Vista Windows Mail has quit working

Aug 24, 2007 11:03AM PDT

I have seen several discussions on this problem, but I can't seem to find a fix. My email is Windows Mail using Vista Home. Windows Mail suddenly began requesting User Name and Password in a pop-up box, but would not accept the entries. I went to the Windows Help and followed the directions regarding SSL and authorizations. This stopped the pop-up box, but when the Send/Recieve tries to connect with the ISP it generates an error message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.suddenlink.net', Server: 'pop.suddenlink.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

As I checked the Internet for a possible solution, I found that the Norton I was running may have been a problem. I have uninstalled Norton, but the Windows Mail problem still remains. I even uninstalled a Windows Update that reportedly may have been causing this problem - that too was unsuccessful.

Please let me know if there is fix.

Thanks,

Marc

Windows Mail Fixed
Aug 25, 2007 12:58PM PDT

I tried to contact my ISP provider and found that I could not get into the account there (Suddenlink). When I spoke with the rep, she said that if I had used a different account before this one (Cox) the password would have been changed recently, without my knowledge or input. She requested a new password from me, which allowed me to get into my account with Suddenlink.

Once that was done, I went into my Windows Mail (Vista) and used the new password. We then went through the General and Advanced properties of the account, which basically took away the changes I had followed to set the SSLs and authorizations. This worked and allowed the Windows Mail to access the ISP and send/receive emails.

I hope this helps others.

Try Windows live mail desktop
Aug 28, 2007 1:55AM PDT

Have you tried out the new windows live mail desktop app? I downloaded it a couple of months ago and I like it better than the Vista mail and its faster than loading up my webmail pages.
I thought it had replaced the old Vista Windows Mail program, but I could be wrong. The search function in live mail is GREAT.
Good luck.
