Just a question.

Can you view the webpages via a wired connection (either dialup or broadband)? And via a secured wireless connection (if you have such around)?

Check IE connection settings for a proxy server address that your broadband software install may have set up. Write down those settings and then pull 'em out and see if the ol' Internet comes rollin' down.

I had the same WiFi Problem
Feb 11, 2007 10:42PM PST

I had the exact same error on my brand new Dell 9400 Inspiron. The Dell "tech Support?" finally told me there was something incompatible between Vista & my 2 wire 6.0mps modem. They were wrong. I went and did a system restore back to the first time on turned on the system & everything conected perfectly. I realized that the problem was I had tried to import my Internet setting from my XP unit using the MS "easy transfer" system. Do not ever do this. Data files will transfer to Vista OK but beware of Apps & settings. Also the transfer knocked out my sigmatel sound driver so I had to download & reinstall that driver as well. Doing new system restore points every time you install something new in Vista,& it works,is also a good idea
Everything connects fine now & runs. I am using IE 7 because I found that Firefox 2 does not run properly in Vista. I also found that other accounting and MP 3 player explorers do not run properly in Vista. so,be carefull what you install until at present.

Still having this problem

Hi, I also have an new Inspiron 9400 with Vista Premium on it and regularly not able to connect to the Internet after my system was on standby. I haven't tried with the cable yet. But I have also tried to do the "easy transfer" setup but didn't continue because the old pc had another language installed and didn't let me continue so the problem must also be somewhere else... Do you have an idea? Would be appreciated alot!!!

Same problem
Mar 6, 2007 2:27PM PST

I just purchased a Gateway MT 3705. After an hour on the phone with SBC and the same with Gateway, both are telling me that this is a Vista compatibility issue. I too can connect to the network with "limited connectivity" (no internet). When I plug the ethernet cable in, everything works fine. Gateway is telling me to wait a few weeks that the compatibility problems are being fixed. SBC is telling me little because all of their stuff is in XP, so frankly that don't know either. Any help would sure be appreciated.

What I'm finding is...

It's working fine. I take such units to a hotspot and it works. Then we look at the router and such settings to sort it out.

Then return it.

Since it doesn't connect at a free/open hotspot, it's a DOA.

My new Dell Inspiron E1705 hooks up fine to ethernet LAN and to wireless via home 2wire modem, but will not link to any WiFi hotspot. I see the connection established in the network window, but IE will not show any pages no matter what I do with the public/private network setting, the firewall safety settings, or with the DNS or proxy settings.

This Vista OS is a dud. Why do paying customers have to be beta testers?

I solved this problem by
Mar 20, 2007 9:41AM PDT

I went to Internet Explorer/tools/ internet options
I put a check mark in "Never dial a connection, clicked apply.
Then I closed the browser and opened it again and went to tools/internet options/ connections
and disabled LAN, removed the check mark in Lan settings.
It worked! If you try this remember what you checked and unchecked in case you have to back track.
I also went to control panel, administrative tools, services. I toggled DHCP, that is, stopped it and restarted it.
Hope this works for you. Ann
