It all depends on the computer's hardware and the software you will be installing. Vista has a list of known incompatibilities and glitches, but so does Windows XP and each of its predecessors. The truth is you'll encounter some problems no matter what operating system you choose. If the hardware and software is Vista-compatible I'd purchase it now. On the other hand, if you have applications that are not yet ready for Vista you'll want to install Windows XP and wait for the individual products' updates, and potentially Vista SP1, due out the first half of 2008 with a beta this November, I believe.

P.S. If you're unsure of the hardware and software's compatibility just let us know what software you intend to run and what computer, printer, etc. you have and we'll be able to identify potential incompatibilities.
Is Vista really running smoothly, glitch free and without lots of issues (like driver compatability), or should I get XP for my wife's new laptop. Neither of us are too tech savy and we want an OS that is stable and won't give us any proplems.
