Vista volume continuosly muting and unmuting by itself.

Oct 16, 2007 12:12AM PDT

Hello. I have Vista running on a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop. It has been set up and running for several months now with 0 problems. Recently I downloaded Quicktime / iTunes combo to play m4a files from my iTunes on my XP machine at home. That's the only change it has had. SO... I'll be working on something and the volume box will pop up (the smaller one) and it will mute. I will unmute it and it will pop up again muted. Eventually it will sit there and mute and then unmute and then mute, and so on... by itself.

I tried googling this, but no luck. Has anyone else heard of this.

Some sound card drivers will mute the input to prevent

Some sound card drivers will mute the input to prevent feedback whenever you start recording, so you may have to unmute it again after recording starts.

Where I found this to drive an owner nuts is when they had Vista's voice recognition turned on and that nice interplay of voice recognition and drivers did this.

Sorry I have no exact fix but we disabled the voice system and the issue vanished.

Hope that's it.

Question for Bob
Oct 19, 2007 1:59AM PDT

Hi Bob,

After reading your reply I went into volume properties and have disable all of my recording devices and this does not seem to fix it. It's funny actually. I have had this machine running Vista for a little over 2 months now and it has just now started with the volume/mute going crazy.

It will actually go most of the day and not do it and then all of a sudden it will happen 20 times in a minute. I can just sit back and the little volume pop up will stay up and the x will appear and disappear over and over again in the box beside mute.

I think I said before that the only thing I have recently downloaded was iTunes. I have done a system restore and that didn't work.

If this had to be either spyware or a virus, what would be your guess? I have Symantec Corporate and it is up to date, but I have no spyware protection.

Anyway, just wanted to get back to you on this and see if you may have any other Ideas.

*oh yeah, I said I disabled the recording devices. I also have never turned voice recognition on, but I will check it.

Thanks

"I also have never turned voice recognition on, but I will check it."

That's the item I noted and needs checking. Sorry if that's not it but all I can do is note what's worked for others.
