Once you get the machine running without the updates, then open the Control Panel, then disable the Automatic Updates. Once that's done, then visit the Windows Updates site online and start installing the updates, one by one.. Sometimes, individually installing the updates allows the computer to install them correctly.. And sometimes, you may be able to identify the specific update that is the culprit in the lockup.

I seem to be stuck in a viscious cycle. I log in, windows downloads updates, then when I try to shut down it doesn;t work as it says installing updates with teh whirly thing and the computer just hangs. Going back into my computer I can log in and then use it for about two minutes then everything just hangs. If I log in on safe mode and then reinstall a previous version this works until VISTA installs more updates and the whole cycle starts again. It seems to be a problem with the update installer - any thoughts
