I think a re-post is necessary

to remove all the HTML formatting. Not your fault, there's a bug in the software.

If you are copy/pasting, turn off the Text Editor before pasting, (the icon on the end, next to the smiley), then "Preview" your post before submitting.

Vista starts up and shuts down straightaway
Dec 24, 2011 3:29AM PST

Can any one help with my start up problem?
For my desktop pc I have a power and boot up problem that does like this..........
Turn on main front power button
BIOS screens run through all OK
Windows start-up screen runs OK (with the flashing green/yellow bar)
Then there is the usual pause of one or two seconds (before the Windows icon appears). But instead of the login screen the computer stops, then restarts in a low power mode. The screen is black and not powered up and nothing else will happen.
BUT if I turn the pc off at the main power button at the rear and switch on again it will boot up, all through the processes with no problems. However if I do this at the stage above I have effectively forced a shut down and Windows enter via the recovery, but this still works fine. Windows etc works then with no problems at all.
Also if after shutting the PC down correctly I turn off the rear power button and turn it on before start up, all starts OK. It will also start in Safe Mode OK and runs all OK once the start-up has finished.
I have kept notes of various recommendations and fixes suggested, these are:
• updating the graphics driver (this was out of date)
• checking the system time is correct (CMOS battery)
• run Windows Diagnostic Tools for memory errors - "no memory errors detected"
• gone into msconfig.exe to disable start-up devices
• Booted from the Vista CD "Startup Repair" read out with "could not detect a problem" and "no errors and OS booted successfully".
• Checked all rivers in device manager - saw that SM BUS controller had no driver (Code 2Cool. Installed this driver to remove the yellow error marker. Thought this might have done it as this BUS is used for power regulation, but still the same problem.
• I have kept an eye on the system temperatures and these are all normal. Nothing goes wrong during normal use at all.
• Done a full virus and malware scan with nothing found
None of these has had any effect, would you believe it!
Any good ideas would be appreciated. Could it be a software problem (drivers?) or a hardware problem (power supply?).

My first thought
Dec 24, 2011 3:37AM PST

but I am no hardware expert, is a flaky or underpowered PSU. The PSU can degrade over time, and if you have added hardware then that will tax the PSU more.

Keeping the mains supply on with the switch at the back causes the reboot loop, but turning it off then back on again seems to help.

If I knew more I would recommend changing the PSU, but you may want to see what others think.

What I'm running into on such machines.

I notice you omitted the power supply specs, age and that you have the old 8800 video.

With that as clues and your comment about power I'll agree and note I'm seeing the 8800's dieing now.
Hope this helps,

Hi - thanks for looking at this.
The power supply is an Epsilon 900 from mid 2008. I am able to monitor the voltages using Speedfan and all appear steady during normal operation. There are no ill effects during operation, once startup has been successful. One interesting point that may point to the power supply appears to be that, if I shutdown or restart say 1/2 hour later, it boots fully OK but if I have left it overnight, the same problem occurs. Furthur info which seems to point to hardware issue is the low fan speed I get after the inital bot sequence, coupled with the fact that the monitor reverts to standby mode. Does the power supply "reset itself" once I turn the power button (on the Epsilon) off and then back on again? The graphics are all good and the pc is not used for gaming or other high stress use.
Do you think this is more a hardware issue than software or drivers?

You may be monitoring with software?

The wait and use later points to hardware issues. I find those that rely on software like that to be harder to convince it's this or that.

You have two well known things that age and create troubles.

I agree

I use Speedfan as well, but I know not to trust it in all cases and use it just as a rough guide.
