Microsoft has just released Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 to the general public. It is currently an optional download, so you will not be automatically notified that it is available for download/installation. Before downloading please keep in mind that it is still a beta release: Stability is not guaranteed and bugs may very well still exist. It has been deemed safe for use by the average consumer, but should not be run on production machines. If you're hesitant you should wait for the final release of Vista SP1 to debut during the first quarter of 2008.
That said, in lieu reading the 17-page change log have a look at a few of the enhancements SP1 offers:
-> Direct3D 10.1, though few graphics cards can take full advantage of it yet.
-> Extended EFI support under 64-bit editions of Vista.
-> Vast reduction in the number of UAC prompts per task. (Reduced from 4 to 1.)
-> Bitlocker (Ultimate only) can now protect all volumes, not just the system partition.
-> Enhancement of the Backup wizard to include EFS-protected files.
-> Enhanced application compatibility.
-> Reduced battery consumption for laptops.
-> Faster and more accurate calculation of estimate times remaining. Eliminates the extended hang time experienced by some.
-> File transfer performance enhancements:
------>25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
------>45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
------>50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
-> Reduction of boot time by as much as 20%.
-> 32-bit versions of Vista will now report the full 4GB of RAM, though it may not be able to use it all.
As you can see, this service pack performance, reliability, and compatibility enhancements took priority over new features, which is very promising indeed. If you wish to try it out...
1.) Click Here to download the update release program. (348KB)
2.) Run Windows Update and install all "Important" updates it finds and reboot.
3.) Run Windows Update again, downloading KB937287, and wait up to 10 minutes.
4.) Run Windows Updates a third time, downloading KB938371, and rebooting.
5.) Run Windows Updates a fifth and final time, this time downloading/installing SP1 RC1.
When you do, keep in mind a few things:
1.) The update is between 50MB and 65MB, and thus is not recommended for users with dial-up connections.
2.) The installation process can take quite some time, exceeding 1.5 hours in some cases even with the latest hardware. Allow yourself plenty of time.
3.) If you don't have a recent backup it's wise to create one, just in case.
4.) You can uninstall Vista SP1 RC1 at any time through the Control Panel or by performing a System Restore.
If you have any thoughts/comments after installing SP1 RC1 or the release in general, feel free to sound off below.
Enjoy!
