Vista SP1 RC1 now available...

Dec 11, 2007 11:59AM PST

Microsoft has just released Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 to the general public. It is currently an optional download, so you will not be automatically notified that it is available for download/installation. Before downloading please keep in mind that it is still a beta release: Stability is not guaranteed and bugs may very well still exist. It has been deemed safe for use by the average consumer, but should not be run on production machines. If you're hesitant you should wait for the final release of Vista SP1 to debut during the first quarter of 2008.

That said, in lieu reading the 17-page change log have a look at a few of the enhancements SP1 offers:

-> Direct3D 10.1, though few graphics cards can take full advantage of it yet.
-> Extended EFI support under 64-bit editions of Vista.
-> Vast reduction in the number of UAC prompts per task. (Reduced from 4 to 1.)
-> Bitlocker (Ultimate only) can now protect all volumes, not just the system partition.
-> Enhancement of the Backup wizard to include EFS-protected files.
-> Enhanced application compatibility.
-> Reduced battery consumption for laptops.
-> Faster and more accurate calculation of estimate times remaining. Eliminates the extended hang time experienced by some.
-> File transfer performance enhancements:
------>25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
------>45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
------>50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
-> Reduction of boot time by as much as 20%.
-> 32-bit versions of Vista will now report the full 4GB of RAM, though it may not be able to use it all.

As you can see, this service pack performance, reliability, and compatibility enhancements took priority over new features, which is very promising indeed. If you wish to try it out...

1.) Click Here to download the update release program. (348KB)
2.) Run Windows Update and install all "Important" updates it finds and reboot.
3.) Run Windows Update again, downloading KB937287, and wait up to 10 minutes.
4.) Run Windows Updates a third time, downloading KB938371, and rebooting.
5.) Run Windows Updates a fifth and final time, this time downloading/installing SP1 RC1.

When you do, keep in mind a few things:
1.) The update is between 50MB and 65MB, and thus is not recommended for users with dial-up connections.
2.) The installation process can take quite some time, exceeding 1.5 hours in some cases even with the latest hardware. Allow yourself plenty of time.
3.) If you don't have a recent backup it's wise to create one, just in case.
4.) You can uninstall Vista SP1 RC1 at any time through the Control Panel or by performing a System Restore.

If you have any thoughts/comments after installing SP1 RC1 or the release in general, feel free to sound off below.

Enjoy!
John

Above instructions did not work, for RTMs, no KBs found. Website instructions did not work, for RTMs, no KBs found. Direct download of program did work but fails to install from automatic up dates. Fails to load during required restart after installations. Microsoft notified waiting for reply.

still no go. SP1 installs then loads to 100% of 3 stages then reverts. Appears to be becoming corrupt somewhere then aborts/times out after nearly completing installation, in other words so near yet so far. 18 attempts to date. Other problems a long hang at 99% of up date down load, hangs at start, at 60% and 100% of stage 3 during restart. Prior to stage 3, files load some of the time. Working with Technet SP1 forum to straighten it out. For some disabling all but essential programs prior to installation solves this problem. They'll certainly need to repair this glitch before releasing Vista SP1 officially.

I'm still a no go with Vista SP1
Dec 19, 2007 12:24PM PST

Wish I had a solution for you. Better save your thanks for then. Remember this a pre-release version, they can have there problems but it's better that these problems get caught here before it's downloaded to millions. I'm sure a few more volunteers would be appreciated. I'm not having problems with my computer the ---- thing just will not load. I think I've downloaded it 20 times now, still, no go. Looks like something is corrupting the last 1% of the download, might be a typo, we'll see.

Mine worked
Dec 20, 2007 4:02AM PST

First I download that program that flips the flag so Vista Update well catch up. I had to download a couple of other programs first, but I never saw the RC download. Then I found the direct link to the file (some 700mbs) and went to download that, and look Vista Update said it had the same update. I just let it download the full program, it did take forever so there must be a lot they are changing. After at least 45-50 mins it installed everything. I haven't noticed much different yet, but I don't use vista alot!

That download...
Dec 21, 2007 12:01AM PST

Is just the documentation and cmd file, the latter of which makes three modifications to your system registry so that the pre-SP1 files appear in Windows Update. If you're seeing SP1 appear as a download option at all then the cmd file did its job correctly. Beyond that it would likely be a compatibility issue between SP1 and your current installation...an alternative download location, if one existed, wouldn't correct the situation.

Sorry.

It downloads

then attempts to install but fails at the very end at 100% installed. Many others are having this problem as well. I'm working directly with Microsoft Vista SP1 crew to get it working. They say pretty much the same thing. I'm runnning just the standard Vista Business version if there's a compatibility problem then many will have it as well. This is a big deal. Another Oooop for Microsoft.

What surprises me...
Dec 21, 2007 8:42AM PST

The service pack is supposed to fix a lot of existing compatibility issues, but from reports during the beta cycle it appears to have created a few new ones along the way as well. Sad

I don't believe it is a compatibility problem. I believe there is a problem somewhere in the update at or around the 99th% of the download. There's a bug in it that effects the download.

Literally thousands of install problems
Jan 6, 2008 1:58PM PST

I'm wondering if this will postpone the release date for Vista SP1. If it can't be installed other problems might not be identified in time to release it. From the link we can't tell how many are installing successfully. Can we expect other RCs before the final release or is this the only one?

Windows Vista/VistaSP1
Jan 5, 2008 12:05AM PST

I want to start off by saying this. I am not a computer guru so what I did is when I bought my new computer with vista installed on it the first thing I did was has the computer "Optimized" by "the Geek Squad" therefore getting rid of all those unwanted programs that do come with a new computer. I have not had problem one since I've purchased the computer. Now on the subject of Vista SP1, I installed it when it first became available and it works great, I have noticed a great improvement in performance,no trouble installing it. To those who seem to be having trouble with Windows Vista I suggest that you have your computer looked at by someone who know what they are doing. Stop the crying and give vista a chance and you'll find that it works just fine after you learn how to operate it and tweek it somewhat.
P.S. I use my Laptop as my home "Desktop" and have a 19 inch screen, printer and "Bose" speakers hooked up to it. So I ask is the problem the operating system or the operator.

Safely remove mass storage drive
Jan 19, 2008 7:03AM PST

I think I found something SP1 corrected...or it may just be my imagination.

Prior to installing SP1, if my WD USB drive was connected to my new laptop, clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon did nothing. Now it works fine and reports that it is safe to remove the mass storage drive.

Actully Heartlander it was offered to me as part of the package when I bought the computer. However you can take it to them and for a small fee they will perform the task for you. (It was worth the time it took, about two hours)

any more attempts at loading Vista SP1 till it's officially release becomes available and hope it installs then. There will be a GREAT howling if MS botches this one. I'll them a 60% chance that they will, any takers? Happy Pardon my sniffling and whining if that's what you believe it is.

One caveat...
Jan 6, 2008 10:31AM PST

I started to download this and one MS warning stopped me in my tracks. When the final SP1 is released, it will not install over the beta. The beta will have to be removed first. So if you go ahead, I'd suggest making a disk image first or be sure not to delete the uninstall files. As for myself, I'll wait.

It's a minor release...
Jan 12, 2008 2:30AM PST

Certainly nice to upgrade to, but they labeled it a "refresh" since there aren't really enough changes to qualify it for "RC2" status. On that line, I'm not high on expecting to see an RC2 hit the streets before its official release later this quarter.

Yes...
Jan 14, 2008 2:38AM PST

It's currently in RC Refresh nearing final release, and like now will be available in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors through Windows Updates. Microsoft has stated they are committed to 32-bit operating systems at least through Windows 7, Vista's successor.

Problem uninstalling Vista SP1 RC1 through installed updates
Jan 21, 2008 11:46PM PST

I have installed Vista SP1 RC1 on a Vista Business laptop. To prepare myself for the final version i have had a look at uninstalling the update. however when i try and view the installed updates under program and features, i only see updates related to office and other publishers. there are no Windows Vista updates viewable at all even though i have installed all updates since vista was released (these are viewable in windows updates\view update history.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Look for KB936330 - Service Pack for Windows in the list of installed updates. As long as the install info was not cleaned up (CCleaner and others can do that) it should be there.

CCleaner removing Windows updates from installed updates?
Jan 22, 2008 4:27AM PST

I have looked for this installed windows update and it doesn't appear in the list like any other windows updates that i installed. the only updates that appear are office related.

I have installed CCleaner and i have it configured to run quite regularly, i wonder if this is the root of my problem. The only thing that i can see that i have ticked that could cause the problem is "hotfix uninstallers" is selected in the windows\advancded section. Could this be the cause and if so how can i rebuild my installed updates list so i can uninstall the sp1 rc1? This is the only update that i am currently interested in as i have to uninstall this before the final sp1 release and i don't want to install a fresh copy of vista. Any thoughts on how this might be achieved?

Many thanks
