Vista Sleep/Screensaver issues

Jan 24, 2007 10:39PM PST

Hi. I'm running Vista Ultimate on a core2duo system with an EVGA 7900GT video card. Vista runs great but when I leave my pc running and come back later, I have garbage on the screen (either a white or green color with lines running through it). I first thought it was just a sleep mode problem and changed the power management settings to never sleep. After leaving the computer long enough for the screen saver to kick in and the screen to turn off, I checked it again and had the same problem.

Any ideas what could be causing this issue? Vista automatically downloaded updated drivers for my video card.

I had the same problem. I was using a none Windows screensaver. It turns out it was not compatible with Vista...yet!
Use one of the standard Vista screensavers and see what happens. Just an ideaHappy

Tried using the Bubbles screensaver that came with Vista and same result. Until they come out with a fix for this I've set my power setting to never to into sleep mode, or shut down the screen. I'll just turn off my monitor when I leave the computer (unless I'm turning it completely off). Still a hassle, but otherwise I'm liking Vista. Oblivion wasn't working with XP (crashing on load), but under Vista it's running fine.

Must also be other issues with Screensavers...

Mine works at times and other times stops and leaves a black screen... when mouse is moved the normal page shows. Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

I tired all the built in savers and they all did the same thing. The only thing thats worked for me is to remove the PCIE7900GT from the system and use a 5XXX or better AGP card. I know, its not really a good fix. Theres probably something up with the Nvidia drivers when used with a 7900. My other Vista machine has an 8800GTX in it and it works fine.

Come to think of it

nVidia has had some driver problems with Vista. I am running an ATI Video Card and the Vista WDDM drivers give me no problems and now I am using "Electric Sheep" with no issues!

I think its more specific then just saying Nvidia...

I removed the 7900 and installed a 5700LE and now all is good. My other Vista machine has an 8800 in it and its been perfect. The only big difference that I can see is that the 7900 is PCIE and the 5700 is AGP. Mobo drivers maybe?? The device manager isnt complaining about anything...

I have the exact same problem! Vista runs just fine until the PC goes to sleep or the screen turns off. Quick question for ya. Are you using a DVI-->VGA adapter or running the monitor from a DVI port? I have the same card from the same manufacture with the mentioned adapter. I've tried using a few PCI and AGP cards and they all recover fine. Problem is none of them will run AeroGlass.... I'm going to toss a PCIE 6800U in the computer and see what it does.

Screensaver / Sleep Problems... Fixed.
Jun 13, 2008 9:38AM PDT

Problem was the screensaver wouldn't auto start. Also It wouldn't stay asleep either.

I have a PS/2 connected mouse and keyboard so it wasn't the HID non-user input filter that was needed.

What was happening was the network adapter kept waking up the computer and resetting the screensaver timer.

To Fix:

1. Click "Start/Control Panel/System/Device Manager

2. Under "Network Adapters" is your particular "Ethernet NIC"

Right-click and choose "Properties"

3. Click "Power Management" tab

4. Un-Check "Allow this device to wake computer"

5. Click "OK"

Fixed.

Enjoy.....
