You can now boot what they call a Live CD called UBUNTU. No installing, no learning linux. Just boot and click around to see if you can see the files so you can copy them out.
Another option is to remove the drive and put it into another machine like a desktop or some USB enclosure to copy the files out.
No spare machines? Install a new HDD, reinstall the OS and put the drive into some USB case for access later.

Hi All,
I'm trying to fix a friends old
laptop (Inspiron 1525 Vista SP1) - stopped working a couple weeks ago. Out of
the blue Vista wouldn't boot for her at all. The green status bar appears at
bottom of screen but nothing else. Then it tries to do Startup Repair which
won't work, giving following info:
