Vista Photo Gallery Not Showing Photos

by twistoffhero / April 14, 2008 2:28 PM PDT

We recently got an HP laptop with Vista installed. I had all of my music and photos on an external hard drive and transferred it all to the laptop (set up a back up to the external) and now som of my photos are not showing up (deleted?!?!?) and some are showing the default photo.

The ones with the default photo: when I try to open them it says "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. This file format is not supported, or you don't have the latest update."

I am downloading SP1, and I have checked for updates on all and NOTHING shows up. EVERY picture (visible or not) show as JPEGs...

PLEASE HELP! We had photos from family trips!

Two guesses

If you moved these with a CD then it might have had an error in it. Start over, burn them to a different CD/DVD and try again.

Two, there is a file extension incompatibility between the old file/photo and Vista. This would be especially true with picture you might have taken years ago. See "help and support"> in the search box type "file name extensions"> scroll too "change the file name for a picture". Disclaimer....proceed at your own risk. You should review this section carefully before proceeding there are risks associated with changing file extensions, should you decide to continue then the risk is entirely yours.

Perhaps the easiest solution is to find another picture viewer. Like this one:

http://picasa.google.com/download/

There are many others.

Can you share if IRFANVIEW will view it and what is reported for the file type?

"what is reported for the file type" This will tell which file extension(s) is/are causing the problem.

Does it works?
by tungchuan / April 17, 2008 3:44 PM PDT

I will try but don't doubt it works. I copy or cut those files into my HP laptop (Compaq 6510b, Vista Business), I can see and open those file, and it'll just disappear after short while, maybe after re-start! Folder is there but without content, nowhere you can trace it! Or maybe, if the file is there, the Gallery will tell you the file can't be open as wrong format or etc....

Any idea? Very odd.....

thks.
