Vista Not reading Cds-Reads DVDs But not DATA CDS

Aug 14, 2008 5:44AM PDT

Dell Inspiron 1525-bought fitted with Vista.

The CD drive will read and play DVDs and music CDs but when I tried to put in a CD of files (both Word and pictures, etc) which had been written onto the CD on my old XP laptop, the Dell acknowledged that the CD was present but would not read the data on it. Sometimes it recognises the amount of data present but it still refuses to open the disk-the green task bar at the top of the screen fills up after about 5 mins and then it simply doesn't function anymore.

What can I do? (Quite a problem as I need many of these files for work purposes.)

Try deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters.
Aug 14, 2008 11:08PM PDT

Try deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} in the registry. This often solves most if not all optical drive issues. This key is only for Vista searching UpperFilters at support.microsoft.com may also give you the key for deleting it in other versions of windows. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us gives detailes on it for vista. You may not have upgraded to Vista but the steps can eaven apply to frshly installed windows Vista.
