Vista not detecting modem

I have a Three wireless modem but for some reason I can't install it on my laptop - when I plug the modem cable into the USB port nothing comes up on screen; nothing initiates.

The modem and cable, I presume, are working fine because the light comes on on the modem, but the computer doesn't react in any way to suggest I've attached something. It just stays completely blank.

Why is this and how can I solve it?

What does the installation guide tell you ...

about installing? it's not uncommon that you have to initiate the driver install by running a program from the CD that came with the device.
