The dv6000 model line is a plague. Google "dv6000" and once the troubles start you know to do one thing. Restore it to the factory load and if that does not clear it up you know to tell them to write it off.
"I don't want to have to wipe the drive and start anew with either Vista or 7 (only as a last resort)."
If it's like the thousand others I've seen that will not fix it.

I have an HP Pavillion dv6736nr Entertainment PC I bought in 2008. It has Vista Home Premium (recently updated to SP2). For the most part, it has served me well. However, within the last week I have started noticing some issues. For instance, I would get error message dialog boxes telling me that "Microsoft Windows Search Indexer has stopped working and is restarting." This would happen several times. Also other services would stop working and would restart or close.
Thirdly, after a period of time, the system would freeze . When this occurs, I notice that the activity LED for the HD is dark. I would then restart. After I log in, I would get those error messages..and..also Windows Explorer would stop then restart. This would occur several times..as if my copy of Vista was illegitimate (it is not). Then this would suddenly stop and I could use the comp.
I am wondering if it is my HD on its last legs or if it is an OS-related issue. I don't want to have to wipe the drive and start anew with either Vista or 7 (only as a last resort).
