After you get it going and before installing Vista.
I have an old Dell Laptop, running XP. I have XP install CD, Vista DVD, however as my old laptop does not DVD drive; I copied Vista DVD?s content to an external HD and tried to install Vista from there...
Instead of upgrading XP or installing Vista on the laptop, just to kick tires, I started installing Vista with target location as an external HD that is connected via USB. Now, the computer won't boot up, probably it is unable to recognize external USB drive. I tried to reinstall XP, changed the BIOS settings to boot from CD first, however, even that setting is not recognized during boot time... Getting blue/purple screen that Vista did not install correctly, rebooting... need help to recover from infinite boot/reboot loop. I have all data backed up, so even if I have to format the drive, I am OK... Your help is appreciated.
