Vista freezing after removing Norton-should I do a recovery?

Jul 6, 2009 1:33AM PDT

After I uninstalled a previous version of Norton for a newer different version (the install froze itself), my computer now freezes quite often.

Is this a sign of a virus or more a corrupted file or registry? I ran my Norton 360, and no viruses were found. I do notice that my windows defender doesn't acknowlege the Norton program and thinks I do not have an anti-virus program.

Would it be best to save my files to my external harddrive, then do a complete system recovery?

I have windows vista with all of the service pack updates, on my HP 6366 (sp?).

Thank you. I have done system restore
Jul 6, 2009 3:51AM PDT

multiple times in the past...never due to freezing, but due to things like little glitches when the log in screen shows up, that kind of thing.

I am going to do a restore tonight to see if things go smoothly. I think something about uninstalling the Nortons, and installing the yahoo widgets and the firefox 3.5 didn't agree with my laptop.

Let me share.

I'm typing on my dv6910us and it's setup is very stock. I have free avg and let the Vista firewall do that other chore. For the web browser that is a personal choice but use Seamonkey most of the time since I'll use the web editor on occasional. Adblock plus is installed too.

Other apps are Office 2003, Visual Studio 2008 and the latest Open Office.

And my machine is downright boring as to issues.

Recovery should help.

My Vista Home Basic has been resetted many times owing to a variety of problems. Microsoft system recovery to an earlier date should solve most problems and you need not save your files before doing a the Microsoft system recovery to an earlier date.

Which Norton product and version are you using?
Jul 7, 2009 7:34AM PDT

Hi milliondollarbbw31,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Can you please tell me what Norton product and version you had tried to install?

There is the possibility that there are infections on your system that can be contributing to the freezing. The fact that the Windows Security Center is not recognizing Norton is also problematic and points to a problem with the installation of Norton.

If you could let me know the product and version you are using I can provide you with the correct procedure to check for infections and to properly remove and reinstall Norton.

Thank you,
Mike
