VISTA CANNOT LOAD DRIVERS FOR USB EXTERNAL HARD-DRIVE

Aug 6, 2007 3:00AM PDT

Hi, I recently upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate and when I try plugging in my Iomega 80gb USB external hard-drive it says that it cannot load drivers for it. In Win XP its fine and loads them automatically, thats what should happen in Vista right? I was wandering if there is a sloution for this. Thanks, George

No drivers needed however...

Some of these drives try to run some autorun software and that fails. For those you have to sandblast the drive clean with DBAN and start over (sometimes.)

The maker of the drive often has updates to add their ONE TOUCH BACKUP to Vista and make it work again.

In closing the lack of detail in you is going to have me guess badly. For instance no word on the PC or if you tried other USB 2.0 ports.

I had the same problem with a jump drive.
Aug 6, 2007 4:18AM PDT

The jump drive works fine on 2 pc's but has problems on another. All machines are Vista Ultimate. The error message I get on the one that is doesn't work on is the driver is missing. Whe i search the manufacturer's site it said drivers aren't needed for any OS after Win 98. By the way the packaging said Vista ready. I think it's a problem with the manufacturer of the drive.

Sorry. No make or model.

It's unwritten so who knows if this was some owner installed OS or such. These details when missing make for a long wait for any answer.

Finish

I figured out the problem and fixed it. I copied the Win XP drivers in to the system32 driver file. Thanks anyway

Just a guess.

I wonder if this was the usual home made machine. If that was shared I move to finding the motherboard drivers. But many don't like such guesses so I ask members to fill in the missing details.

Driver Detective Worked for me

Driver Detective gets crummy reviews, but it worked for me. My external usb and esata drives now work with my Vista installation on my new Toshiba notebook.
