vista black screen of death with mouse cursor

i have received the vista black screen of death with mouse cursor. I can do F8 key and get into the screen with several options. I select the repair option, which brings up several windows and finally get to the system recovery options. Here windows memory diagnostic tool works and I can get the command prompt to open. I need to recover because I need files on the computer. any help would be great.
