Vista basic to premium upgrade problem

Jun 12, 2010 12:14AM PDT

Hi,

Im having trouble upgrading from vista basic to premium.

I have purchased the home premium 'upgrade' disc and when i try to install it i get to the section where it asks me to choose my upgrade option...

1 - Upgrade (keep your files, settings, programs and upgrade windows.
Be sure to back up your files...now this is greyed out and not an option although this is what i want to do, and as far as im aware should be able to do?

2 - Custom (advanced)
Install a clean copy of windows, doesn't keep files etc!

Underneath it says, "upgrade has been disabled"
The upgrade cannot be started. To upgrade, cancel the installation and then choose to upgrade to a version of windows that is more recent than the version you are currently running?

As far as im aware, i thought premium was more recent than basic hence the 'upgrade' disc i've purchased, i dont want to lose all my files and do a clean install, after researching windows help page it says in their table of upgrade requirements that all i need to do is select the upgrade option and not the custom option!

I'm kind of new to all this but thought it's be pretty straight forward...any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have SP2 installed on my system

You will need to create your own SP2 slipstreamed Vista install DVD. There are plenty of websites with instructions that are only a google search away.

It's also possible you could just use the anytime upgrade option and enter in the key that is associated with the Home Premium disc you bought to unlock the home premium features.

Those that picked up a retail upgrade package that is out of date. Since those DVDs were free I would not slipstream this one.

What's on the DVD. It does not matter about the purchase date. Ask anyway for the replacement DVD.
