"Shut down SQL server and the error disappeared."
There is not only "the" SQL server but if you installed some versions of Office there is a MSSQL component. Try shutting down or stopping and and all SQL servers on your machine.
Good luck,

PS. Microsoft's BACKUP softwares have rarely been usable. I don't expect this to be any better.
I have a new Dell XPS410 w/Win Vista Home Premium and I have been trying to do a backup (and thereafter it will backup new or changed files weekly) and it fails every time. I am using DVD-RW media and the Backup and Restore Center that comes with Vista. Here is the message I am getting:
"Cannot perform request, device I/O error: 0x8007045d"
One of the techs at Dell even helped me turn off my "restore" points while doing the backup and that did not work either!
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated!
