Vista and IE7

Jun 14, 2007 2:21PM PDT

I think the question has been asked before, but I can't find it now.
Does Vista have to have IE7 or can it be removed and replaced with IE6?
I have had several problems with IE7 like it will close and give an error messege that says "explorer has stopped working and will close" I hadn't seen that for a couple weeks now it's back and worse than before.
Also I am getting page can't be displayed a lot and from several different sites. I can click the back arrow twice and it will then display the page.
I thought at first it was a DNS issue, but I have changed the DNS 3 times and still have the same problem.
I had IE6 on XP for 5 years and it never failed once so I really don't know if it is the Vista or the IE7 or the combination of both.
Has anyone else run into these problems with IE7 and Vista.
Thanks
Wayne

You're stuck with IE7...

The IE6 installer should check the version of Windows before proceeding and thus refuse to proceed. It's designed to do this since it integrates itself with the OS, and Microsoft chose not to support 'downgrading' IE since it leaves you at risk. Thus, you're stuck with IE7, and IE8 down the road. (It's already in development.)

As to the glitches, I haven't encountered them but they are certainly not rare, when dealing with any version of IE in fact. Unfortunately IEFix has not been updated for IE7 compatibility and there's no easy way of repairing IE7 on Vista. You could try SFC (type SFC /scannow, with the space, into the Run dialog box and have your DVD ready), but aside from that you'll have to rely on another browser for a while.

Sorry. Sad

Thanks John:

I was sure that would be the answer.
I like the features and security better on IE7 it's just the stopping, error messages and page loading that bothers me.
It is very random and may not happen for a week or could happen 2 or 3 times a day.
I don't care much for Firefox or Netscape so will deal with the problems of IE7 until Microsoft comes up with a solution.
Thanks again.

How about Opera or Safari?

Avant and some others are based on IE and use its engine and drivers to operate so you'd experience the same problems as you do in IE. However, Opera and the newly-released Safari 3 for Windows are alternatives you may want to have a look at. Like Firefox, they operate independently of IE but have their own unique interfaces. You may get lucky and find one suitable until the issue is addressed.

I will take a look at opera this weekend and download and try it.
A friend I use to work with swears by it and said he will never use anything but Opera.
Will let you know how it works out.
Thanks

Thanks Again John!

I just got around to downloading and using Opera and it works like a charm.
It took a little getting used to, but now I really like it and will be using it from now on even if Microsoft does get IE7 fixed.
