Boot SAFE MODE. But some machines require the BIOS to support USB Keyboards. Your post is a little light on details.
Some accept drivers from Windows Update. Hint: Don't do that.

Greetings,
I have a problem i've never run into before, and was hoping you guys might be able to point me in the right direction.
Recently I performed an automatic update for a built machine using Vista x64. It had been running perfectly for more than a year before this. After restarting the machine, it booted up fine, but when in windows itself it apparently would not recognize the network card, audio card, or USB ports. As a result after about 15 or so seconds it enters into the blue screen memory dump and restarts, asking to choose safe mode etc.
The main difficulty i am having is that the mouse and keyboard (both wired USB) no longer function. Interestingly, the keyboard works on the boot screen, but anything after that it appears to loose power, or appears at least to be disconnected. However the mouse has power, but does not register as connected when in windows.
I am stumped on how to access the system to perform a system restore without the keyboard :/
