Any changes 32 to 64 or back seems to mean a fresh install.
Hope what you can't lose is on backups.

Do I have to install Win 7 64 or can I use the 32-bit version?

I always back up before any major changes. Because of possible 64-bit software conflict, I was wonder if a fresh 32-bit install on a former 64-bit OS would work.
And in short you end up with a clean install. I know a lot of folk wish it wasn't so.
You will have to back up your programs and files then do a custom installation in order to set your OS as a 32-bit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions.
