Vista 32-bit to 7 64-bit upgrade failure

May 23, 2010 2:59PM PDT

Hello everyone. Not sure whether this belongs here or in the Vista forum so I am posting it in both. I just decided to upgrade my home built desktop to Windows 7 from Vista. I had gotten an upgrade disk from my school just a little while back and when I tried to install, it froze at 98% on the Expanding Windows Files step. I did a hard restart on my computer and have gotten a plethora of error messages since, including:

Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Code: 0x80070570

followed by another restart and:

Exception Processing Message 0xc0000102 Parameters
0x000007FEFD89715C 0X000007FEFD89715C
0x000007FEFD89715C 0X000007FEFD89715C

The file or directory
C:Windows/winsxslx36_microsoft-windows-s...gurationengine-umof_3lbf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none.48090613e092C7a4 is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

Status: 0xc000000f

I am unable to run Chkdsk because I can not access anything except for the install disk menu, which when tried takes me through all the messages again. I have tried looking up answers but most were unhelpful to say the least.
As of right now, my computer will turn on and either:
a) go to a black screen quickly and tell me to put in my operating system disk and restart (which did not work with Vista or 7 disks) or
b) open the install screen and start the installation, failing and giving me the second set of messages above.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds to me

Sounds to me like a bad install disc. Take it back, request a new copy. A lot of times at schools, they'll just burn a copy from some master, and you probably just ended up getting a bad one.

If it happens with a fresh disc, then you probably have an issue with your hard drive.

Could be the hard drive but I think

After seeing missing file messages over the years... When the install is from the DVD drive I know to try a new DVD drive and save myself time and money.

About CHKDSK. I think we can run that from the RECOVERY CONSOLE but how to do that is a google for you.

Did you try to upgrade or do a clean installation?

Though I do not think this caused all the errors messages that you are seeing, part of the problem might be that you cannot "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit. You can only do an upgrade from 32-bit to 32-bit, or 64-bit to 64-bit, when going from 32-bit to 64-bit, you need to do a clean installation.

Good luck and let us know what you find out!

Cheers,
Cassandra

I did do a clean install and that is when it froze the first time. Thank you for the suggestion though.
