Viruses on computer... Help

Dec 3, 2003 2:22AM PST

I cannot get rid of viruses on my computer, they keep coming back. I installed AVG Virus scanner. Each day, or each time I log on, the same Viruses pop up, Back Door. Jeeemp, Java....,there are three of them. My Internet explorer browser keeps going immediately to some proverted search engine, sex patriot, Royal search, it keeps changing. It puts Royal Search and a Porn sites link into the favorites. I want to PERMANENTLY remove or block these sites. How can I do it? My Mozilla Browser is not affected. Thanks so much for your help. These sites are even on my 9 yr old's user.

Viruses on Computer ....Cleanup (Part 1)
Dec 3, 2003 2:38AM PST

Themouser,

First, if your 9 yr old's computer is infected, you'll need to disconnect the computers from the network, because they are reinfecting each other. Next, install and run the programs that are listed at this link on both computers. The spyware removal tools are important:

Hope this helps.

Viruses on computer....Cleanup (Part 2)

Next, if you aren't running on a LAN (network), then you don't need to have a network service called "File and Printer Sharing" installed. It allows the "hole" whereby the infected files are being transferred to your computer. If you are on a LAN, then you need to create a password for your shared drives. If you are not on a network, please uninstall "File and Printer Sharing" like this:

Windows 9.x/ME: Click on Start-Settings-Control Panel, double click on the "Network" icon. When that loads, on the "Configuration" tab, look in the white network components section and click once on the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" to highlight it, then click on the "Remove" button and follow the prompts to remove the service.

Windows 2000/XP: Click on Start-Settings-Control Panel, (or Start-Control Panel in XP), then double click on the "Networks and Dial Up Connections" icon, then find your type of connection type being used currently, either "Local Area Network" or "Dial-Up", then RIGHT click on it, choose "Properties". You should then be able to see the network components that are installed on the computer. If "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft networks" is listed, click once on it to highlight it, then click on the "remove" button.

If you are on a LAN and file sharing is required,(on Win95/98/ME computers) then double click on "My Computer" RIGHT click on the C drive, choose "Sharing" from the menu and type a password in the password lines. Click on Apply, then OK, etc. On Win2000/XP machines you will need to establish specific "permissions" for each shared drive/folder.

Our operating system is Windows XP. Plus, we only have the one computer, my 9 yr old has a user on our main computer. File sharing is unfortunately needed as we have a son in Hawaii(ARMY base) who sends us pics, etc. Thanks.

' File sharing is unfortunately needed as we have a son in Hawaii(ARMY base) who sends us pics, etc'.

sending them as an attachment via email is a lot safer.

just an opinion FWIW.

Themouser, 'File & Printer Sharing' Is NOT Necessary
Dec 3, 2003 7:40AM PST

...in your situation. I believe that we're talking about two different things here. "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is ONLY required when you are connected to a network. Since it appears like you are not connected to a network, then you don't need it installed. Please uninstall it per the instructions I posted previously. It creates a "hole" so that outside sources can do damage to your computer over the internet. It can easily be reinstalled at a later date, if necessary.

E-mail pictures and such can still be exchanged over the internet with "File and Printer Sharing" disabled.

Make sure to run the online scan and the spyware removal tools while using an "administrator" user log on.

Hope this helps.

Got the file and printer sharing disabled and also ran the spy scans. Also, while looking for the File sharing, I found the place to remove the offending site as the home page. Thanks for all your help.
