Virus over took AVG and shut it down.

Yep... any idea what I need to do to get back online and functioning again AVG? I use AVG free the latest edition on a 10 month old Dell machine. Never had a problem before now...

Here is something I found on another site looks pretty much the same;

"Every few minutes a little window in the bottom right corner of my computer will say "Security Warning! Malicious program has been detected. click here to protect your computer." Then when i click on it a window that say 'Spyware Protection' comes up and runs a scan that finds 47 threats. The threats are:
Infected: email-worm.brontok
Infected: w32/child-porn.PROXY/serv...
Infected: trojandownloader:win32/br...
Infected: mal/generic-a, trojan.agent
Infected: w32.blaster.worm
Infected: backdoor.win32.scrab.p "

I saw something on the same site that mentioned a website that I should go to to remove this virus. It was bleeping computer dot com. Didnt want to go there... couldn't pull up any reputible info.

HELP? Please? O_O

Hello moose9876,

the "Spyware protection" is known rogue anti-virus application. Please proceed as follows:

- Try to find the following file:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\defender.exe

- Send it to us for analysis as described in this AVG Free Forum post.
- Rename or delete the file and restart the computer.

If the infection cannot be removed, please provide us (upload to some online storage service and tell us a link to it) with both GMER scan results for brief analysis.

More information about the Spyware Protection in general can be found e.g. on Bleeping Computer.

Thank you.

The computer is running windows 7. I hate windows 7 can't find anything. Searches are cumbersome. The AVG tool GMER cannot be opened on the computer. It opens and then closes just as fast. I'm not sure what to do next.

Hello moose9876,

Please try to follow linked article to Bleeping Computer.

If that does not help, try to download GMER from here. Click on download EXE button, and try to run it again.

If it is still not possible to run GMER, try to provide us with Autoruns tool output (as compressed .arn file).

Also check your computer with AVG Rescue CD.

Thank you
