Running Win XP Home Addition, Norton Pro 2004, Belkin Router, High Speed Connection. Spysweeper will not run and AV scan stops at the 26,873 file without finding a thing.
Symptom: At an even hour, 12,1, 2 etc the system will start freezing for 10 seconds every 20 seconds. It will go on for hours or just a few minutes. Prior to this, I had a situation of 158 sndvol.exe running - deleted all the processes and the file (speakers still working fine - it was supposed to be related to a sound function)and searched for any odd looking files.
Today I found three instances of rundll32.exe. One in windows system 32, 31.0 KB; one in windows system cache dll, same size and one in software distribution (?) 32.5 KB. Could this be a worm attacking my scanning software? Since rundll32 is critical to windows, I have not yet deleted any.
Any ideas out there?
Thank you in advance.
