Question

virus- malware ?

Oct 28, 2014 11:25PM PDT

Is anyone having a problem with a screen that keeps popping up on my computer (Acer - windows 7)- particularly on my AOL when I try to read mail? I can not read mail - I X that screen out and it just comes back.
the screen is:
http://p.ebdr2.com/ok?

All that link says is "ebdr". Are you sure that's what you want us to read?

a screen comes up and the tab says http://p.ebdr2.com/ok?
this covers over anything that I am doing - the page (screen) is blank - just the tabs on the top with the above http
I X out and another tab - same http - I can X out forever and another tab comes up

Yes, I am having the same problem. Have you figured it out? I try to go to the website that pops up to see what it is but it is not a real site from what I can see. I assume it is an AOL issue. Sorry I'm not helping but I hope someone else has had this issue and corrected it.

If you don't already have it, download Malwarebytes and run a MWB scan in Safe Mode with Networking...Or if you are having other system issues download MWB from another(clean) computer, send to flash drive input to ailing system and run from there. As mentioned, do this in Safe Mode with Networking. From what you have said, it sounds as if it could well be an issue with AOL, personally I'd dump AOL and go with a more standard browser and use a different mail server, Windows Live or even better Gmail through Firefox.

I clicked on the above link and it seemed like it would rid my computer of this adware but how do I know it is safe?
don't want to trade 1 problem for a bigger problem.
I do believe it is malware because all kinds of ads pop up and my computer is so slow - see the hourglass a lot.
thanks so much for your help.

A couple of things

One of the things I did was install add block plus for Google Chrome. Since I don't get popups, I am less likely to get infected with malware or viruses that come with them.

Go to your control panel, run Add/Remove programs or the equivalent for Windows 7. Find out what is installed and what shouldn't be. Spend some time investigating because it sounds like something is installed.

I would recommend you download Stinger from McAfee. They are the anti-virus makers and they aren't going to hurt you. This is a lightweight application that you don't have to install. You just run it and see what comes up.

The other thing is go to downloads and download some free antivirus:

http://download.cnet.com/windows/

You can see that a million trust Avast and 800,000 trust AVG.

I have a couple of recommendations.

We use Emisoft anti-malware at work and it is pretty good. It downloads virus definitions from the cloud so it is up to date. We have been virus free at work since using it.

We use to use Malwarebytes and $25 gets you a lifetime license with free updates for the life of your computer. The issue will be that some people say you shouldn't use two anti-virus utilities but I need it because you need something for malicious hackers. And there are printers that may be incompatible according to their manufacturers so you really have to study in order to get things to work or set up your printer with the USB wire so it won't be wireless.
