Virus

May 27, 2005 1:18PM PDT

My friends computer got a spyware/virus problem a while back, so i installed windows anti-spyware. It detected alot but supposedly the spyware couldnt be removed.
Recently when he turns on his computer and boots windows XP a black screen appears with the text "Warning! Your Computer is infected!"
Explorer.exe crashes when it attempts to run, so no start icons etc.
Also, i tried to launch system restore through the "new task" but it wouldnt load.

What should I do other than completely restoring the drive? Its an HP unfortunatly so no windows disk.

Spyware vs virus

A spyware program wont necessarily find a "virus" - you need a virus program - and in your case one that can run from a bootable CD or floppy in DOS mode. I might see if I can get one of the Moderators in the "Virus and security.." forum to help you. In the mean time it is best not to tinker as you may end up doing some permanent damage to your hard disk.

Obviously with any form of recovery, make sure data files are backed up prior to.
