virtual usb sound box

Hi,
Can someone explain to me what is a 7.1 virtual usb sound box. Do I have to have the seven speakers or is this just and enhancement that can be used on my Toshiba Satellite p25s526 with Harman kardon built in speakers and an altec Lansing stereo speaker system that is externally attached. I am running windows XP Professionl OS.
