Viewing distance

Oct 29, 2006 1:11PM PST

I'm looking to buy an HDTV and the two I really like are the 50" Sony SXRD and a Samsung 50" DLP. The problem is I don't have a very large room for them and my viewing distance will be between 6' and 8'. I've never had a TV of that size before, does anyone else sit that close to a TV that large?

42" would be fine

I have a 42" plasma and view it from about 8'. It's perfect. I'm not sure my eyes could handle the 50" at 6 or 7 feet.

At least with the SXRD there would be no screen door effect. I think the DLP may give you one.

Rule of thumb

Normal viewing distance is about 5 times the height of the screen. A 50" screen is 24.5" high or about 10 feet viewing. You can sit closer and HD will still be clear, but you may have trouble taking in the entire screen without moving your eyes left and right. I view my 42" plasma from about 9 feet and it is just about right. Go to a store and try viewing different sizes at 6 to 8 feet to see if it works for you.

Keep Your Thumbs Out Of This.....

.....If it is actually 6 feet then I think that might be a little too close for standard definition sources for many people. However, top quality high definition sources might be OK, but this is, very, very close.

I just got my tape out and viewed 5-6 feet from my 42" EDTV plasma (which has excellent PQ) and it was OK for me. We normally view at about 8 feet.

I think you might find that in the future with more and more quality HD sources, 8 feet would be fine, but no closer (I think HTHMAN has poor periferal vision Happy).

Take you tape measure to the dealer's like suggested and actually test it. There is a huge relative difference between 6 and 8 feet, an increase of 33%.

(I'll whisper here so no one else hears this, but I recommend you also take a look at the 50" 768p Panasonic plasma's...just a hint)

50"

My wife and I are actually looking at the 50 inchers. The prices are getting pretty affordable. The 42 is fine, but the 50 would be really nice at our viewing distance too.

I'm down-sizing from 56'' to 50''

I'm overwhelmed by the size and brightness of the Samsung HL-S5687W (DLP is reputedly a bit harsher picture). I'm returning it, mostly do to the poor stand-alone sound, but I will also be getting a smaller screen and different micro-display technology (the sound is fine for HT when going through an amp, but stand-alone sound - for news, stock report, etc - is bad).

I'm looking at the Sony KDS-50A2000. I've heard the sound is passable, and the LCoS micro projection's (and LCD?s) are possibly easier on sensitive eyes.

The home theater experience is great with a larger HD picture, but a full time, big, bright screen is too much for me. HT is only a small part of my ''viewing habits.''

Purchase from a local store which has a 30 day return policy, if it?s not right take it back.

BUY THE 50" model. Take the advice of the other respondents!!! Measuring seems like a bother, but can help you more than you believe.

VIEWING DISTANCE POO POO

Ive got the Toshiba 72 dlp beast same as the Samsung you are thinking of buying only a tad bigger and my viewing distance is 9 ft. this is a perfect viewing distance for me but most will say iam ko ko I find the experience to be the same as sitting in the middle of a movie theater no problem The Sony and the Samsung are both great t.vs I went with d.l.p. because the picture seems to be a tad sharper than the Sony so try to see both sets side by side also check out the J.V.C idla set they also look stunning I really wanted to go a front project system 103" but going 72" is close and wouthout the problems of having a dark room and expensive screen good luck to you steweeee

Viewing Distance

i forgot where I got the following to figure size of screen:

For HDTV: (Distance from screen(DFS) divided by 1.5)times 12 = screem size

For Plasma (DFS/3.5) x 12 = screen size

I just purchased a Hitachi 55" plasma TV and the instructions say minimum of 7ft, so you will be ok at 6ft or more.

Height of Screen is Critical Issue
Nov 3, 2006 10:30AM PST

I have a 47" rear projection HDTV that we view at distances of about 6-8 ft. When we first got it to replace a 42" standard set my wife (who usually is the one viewing at 6') hated it. "It's too big, I can't see the whole screen, etc, etc!"

After a short period of time, viewing it becomes normal & she said how much she had missed it when she spent a month in Portugal this past summer.

While we were in the 'break-in phase, I checked several sites trying to determine if it was, in fact, too big. I learned that the critical issue is the height of the screen not the width, as your eyes have a much larger field of view side to side, as opposed to up & down. Try it & you'll see.

In one of the earlier messages someone posted some figures to this effect, & I must admit I don't recall what they were or where I found my information. Hope this helps.

viewing distance for 16:9
Nov 4, 2006 7:26AM PST

for plasma, dlp, lcd, max viewing distance..
diameter of screen x 2.5 ex: 50" x 2.5 = 125" or 10.4'

Thanks for all the advice guys, I know my viewing distance doesn't fit all of those formulas but I am glad to hear from real people's experiences with different viewing distances. It would be ideal if the models I wanted were available in slightly smaller versions(maybe 42 or 46inch) but they just don't make many rear-projection tv's smaller than 50''. I re-measured and the distances are more like 7' from my chair and 8' from my couch. I'm still a bit hesitant about getting one of these sets but anyway thanks again for all the input.
