Viewing blu-ray discs directly on my monitor

Aug 28, 2009 1:22AM PDT

I would like to view blu-ray discs on my monitor (Samsung T260) that has a HDMI connector in. I found that the Samsung BD-P2550 blu-ray player has a HDMI connector out. My question is: can I connect these 2 with a HDMI cable and watch discs directly without using my computer?

patfrth,

It's very likely that it's possible, but the input has to be an acceptable resolution, and that is listed in the manual. This means that you may have to adjust the output settings in the Blu-Ray player. The maximum that the television can display is 1920 x 1200. You might try switching the resolutions to see if you can get it to work directly in.

Thank you for your answer but I was mentioning "monitor" and your answer came about "television". I guess the main difference between both is that the monitor has no tuner. Can this inhibit the viewing or not? Is there anybody who already tried this setup with success?

I've done this.

My monitor had the usual HDMI with HDCP (very early models didn't) and connected with a HDMI cable to all HDMI sources the display just works.

I'm wondering why you are asking. Did you try?

Read blu-ray content on PC

I didn't try because I haven't any blu-ray player yet. I was asking this question to know if I could buy a home player in place of an internal one (for my PC).
As I already watch TV on my monitor (through an AV box), I thought I could do the same for DVDs with an HDMI connection. As you told me that it is working fine, I'm now ready to buy this kind of player.
I'm happy with this kind of configuration because I have a small room with my computer stuff. Plus it saves quite some money because the monitor is much cheaper than the same equivalent TV.
The only problem I find is that I don't know how to save the files on the disc to my PC. Some players (like the Samsung one I mentioned earlier) have an USB connection and/or a network one too to update the firmware.
Can I use these connections to read and copy the files to my PC?

patfrth,

What files are you looking to save to your PC?

I'm not sure what copy protections exist, but I do know that you'll need a drive that is Blu-Ray compatible. A CD or DVD drive won't play Blu-Ray movies, or allow you to load those discs.

patfrth,

Sorry, I meant television. I looked up the specs for the monitor, and they were for the monitor, and not a television.
