General discussion

view .mdi format files

Sep 21, 2005 5:30AM PDT

I have a P4 1.8GHZ, 256 mb ram, 40 Gb HDD
I am using Win Xp professional with Office 2003 installed
I had by mistake saved files in .mdi files.

I had made a web layout and since i did not have a printer at home I gave a command to print to file so that it can be emailed to my office where I can take a printout. This has got saved in .mdi file, as the only printer installed on my home PC is the "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer"

I am not able to view the file from any program
Publisher 2003 program
Microdft documet imaging program

All the programs say "Invalid format"

Is there any way to view the file leave alone edit the file??

Of course now I have changed the default settings to "save in TIFF format" so that I don't face this problem again.

I had already seen the article but no luck.
"Microsoft Document Imaging" program does not identify this file and says Invalid format

It's a Microsoft issue.

Frankly, when MS makes up a new format you learn to stay away for a few years till it gets sorted out.

-> About those TIF files. Download IRFANVIEW and see if it will decode them.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP010771031033.aspx says

"On the Windows Start menu, point to All Programs (Programs in Windows 2000), point to Microsoft Office [2003], point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office Document Imaging.
The imaging component makes it easy to view scanned documents on the screen, rearrange multi-page documents, select and manipulate recognized text, annotate scanned documents and online faxes, and send documents to others by e-mail or fax."

If you just made the file with the Microsoft supplied driver, and still can't read it, because you get an error message about 'invalid format', it seems something is wrong with that driver. See if you can make it a repeatable error, then go and complain with Microsoft.

Just print again to TIFF. I don't suppose you deleted your web-layout.

I can open "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" program but the problem is that it does not show the .mdi files

When I use the open command, in the pull down menu of "Files of type" there is only one option tagged image format so my file is not shown at all for me to select.

I tries to rename the file as "tif" and "tiff" extension but no luck. Here it says " File selected is not a valid Microsoft Document Imaging File".

I right click on the file and select "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" program and again the error is " File selected is not a valid Microsoft Document Imaging File".

Any clues ??
