We video taped the interview today, and we wanted to get some opinions on the setup. I'll post the link to the video in a few minutes, it's still encoding. Once you've taken a look, put your suggestions in this thread. Thanks!
Veronica
p.s. this is very bare bones, i just threw it together.

The video looks good... The audio sounds good, perhaps more camera angles though?
Some closer shots would be great too...
Also, that's a nice set up you're running there...
As neat as it was to see a behind-the-scenes look at a Buzz Out Loud podcast, I found myself doing what I normally do when listening...looking at other stuff. So I was basically doing the exact same thing as I do during the regular podcast.
Interesting idea, but for me, not completely necessary.
If you're going to show what goes on in the podcast studio, why not just put a 24-hour webcam in there?
I loved watching the video. Seeing you guys in action when I've just heard it for so long was so cool! But, I must say, it was cool in a novelty kind of way. After awhile, I, too, went about my business while listening.
Listening to BOL is part of my morning routine. Wake up, make tea, make oatmeal for my two year old, check my mail, etc. (Cute note, my son, Torin, will actually point to the computer and say "buzz!" when he hears the intro music, lol). I get a lot of stuff done while being entertained. I think I would continue to only listen to the podcast. Course having the option to watch the video couldn't hurt...
Way cool, though I also wished I could have seen Veronica! You guys are awesome, keep up the good work!
Summer
Not bad, could proberly do with a better set, but the most important thing that is missing is Veronica!
We can't see you
.
I like it but I will probably continue to just listen in the car. I guess I could keep one eye on the road and one on my iPod.
Looking forward to trying it, Pity I am in New Zealand or I'ld offer some help with the production work.
LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.
The current level of Video is just too much for my poor old New Zealand Net connection (Our so called Broadband sucks so bad.) i get 2-3 seconds between breaks as it waits for the rest to download, mybe ok if it were a podcast. But if you do so use mp4 and not h264 as the load on machines under h264 cuts out a lot of users.
Staging. The current angle does not let me see anything of the faces of the interviewers/interviewees. Given the characters you have there this is a pity. 2 camera's and a switch from one side to another would have helped here. 4 would make it awesome. Alternatively you can always record the streams and cut and stitch in post production. but that is time intensive.
If you need to stay with one camera, move it forward of the desk.
The Buzz out loud backdrop makes a good dark backgroung and shows the LCD panels perfectly, but the white washes out the people. Moving forward will help clean that up. The LCD's and Mic Booms will be a real problem, so you will need to place a single camera carefully. Atlernatively get a V table setup (pointing at the signage) and this will expose the faces of the team better . The end 2 keep geting lost behind the mics, so you would either have to overhead mic them (Best) close mic the headset (worst) or Wireless mic them (clipon ... Dangerous.)
Personally I think 2 camera's left and right would be best, but then you will loose the backdrop. In the current form its not really that usable.
But a good idea however the studio is set up for audio not video, convincing the crew to change from podcast to a TV show format (video) will not be easy.
Personall I would look at larry king live, Guys on one side Girls on the other and let the sparks fly on tape. The buzz out loud logo on the wall, and you would have an awesome show.
But Thats just my opinion.
Thanks for the chance to comment
Keep up the good .. and hard work.
Redhats, your comments and mine were almost identical ![]()

.. no problems whatsoever.
Wow, 2 podcasts AND a video today. Man, someone up there sure is smiling down on me today. ![]()
But in all seriousness, the video looks great. However, I would play with the placement of the camera (if possible) so that we could see you as well Veronica.
-Terry
I have the same problem, it will play in Opera, but not in Safari or Firefox, its odd because other cnet videos play fine.
The angle is kind of like a Veronica eye view, makes it feel kind of like it should be a game, where you are the producer of buzz out loud.
Just some quick comments on the look.
It would be nice if your background were dark. Something the color of the BOL poster in the back is fine. Just not white. It blows out and makes it unpleasant to watch on a screen.
The camera should be closer to the people. Right now, we cannot see the expressions on the face of the "actors" and so it ends up feeling a little like you're watching an ant farm: you see movement, you know something's going on, you just can't really tell what it is.
You should have a two camera system for either side of the room setup so you can see one of the interviewers and one of the guests up close from each camera. But that would require an edit after the show to cut to whichever half of the room is speaking- you might not have the resources for that.
It's neat for a behind-the-scenes look but would I tune into this every day? No. I'd rather just listen as it appears now.

I even watched the whole thing! I thought it was pretty cool. I especially liked the commercial! But, I'm confused now, is Veronica a ghost?
She either:
A) Hasn't made it back to her body yet
B) Didn't want to res at the graveyard
C) Didn't have a paly, priest, shaman, or druid in the studios
-Kevin S.
You can see Veronica's hand from time to time. She's not a complete ghost.
Very cool watching buzz talk but 2 problems
1. Problem with cnet. The Videos on cnet are great but there are so small to view. I dont care about the quatlity if i can enlarge it i feel better. also the streeming dosent work well because you cant pause with out it stop loading. So if your internet was crap, then you couldnt wait for it to load some then watch so it wasent choppey.
2. Angles, Maby if there was like a 3 camera set up like on each person talking or closer it would look better.
Love the idea though
Andrew G
I like the high angle, where you can see (almost) everybody. I agree with the multiple camera setup idea. Zooming in to the person speaking would give the video more life. I was quite bored watching the same angle for 20 minutes. Plus we couldn't even see Veronica.
If V, T, or M has the time, maybe they could take pictures. The video disoriented me from the pictures that I saw from a while back. I like to pretend I am in the room with you all, lol.
Or even just take a simple digital camera that has video recording capability, take us on a tour and then post it to You Tube or something and not worry about editing it.
i can dig it. sure more cameras would be great but for the sake of saying "BOL now has a video version," that works just fine for me.
Yeah I got it working now on my Intel iMac in Safari.
Wiredness.....
Simon in Medicine Hat
and it was great!
Thanks to you guys and CNET for creating informative and entertaining content. I will have to breakdown and get a PVP or video iPod (Molly, any recommendations?) if your show goes fulltime video and can be downloaded.

Awsome!
Hopefully you'll post more vidcasts in the future...
I understand Veronica saying that the video is bare bones, but people need to understand that sometimes good audio shows do not translate to good video shows. I have tried watching TWIT video and it brings nothing new to the table. We do live in a visual world where video is the king and I guess some people will take barebones video over great audio.
Yeah, unless it really adds to the podcast experience it's just wasted bandwidth. I know sometimes you want to see the guests but we all know what Molly and Tom and Veronica look like.
I think if I could see their faces/reactions better, it would be an enhanced experience but as it is, it just kinda feels like voyeurism. ![]()
Still, it was a nice first effort and a look at maybe what it could become with a little extra work.
-Kevin
Although this video is bare bones, I appreciate the extra effort put forth to produce it for us. As time goes on, you will probably have a different seating arrangement and, perhaps, Veronica will have time to edit a two camera shoot. However, please consider giving us one video a week and making it available via iTunes with your advertisement intact to help defray the added production cost. I am looking forward to the next video. Thank you for responding to our requests.
