Question

Video Player Crashes in Ubuntu 11.04

Jul 21, 2011 6:33AM PDT

Running Ubuntu 11.04 on a P4 (Celeron actually) 2.93 with 1G ram. Biostar P4M90-M4 board (I was scavenging).

No matter what media player I use (Kaffeine, VLC or Gnome Movie Player) whenever I place the cursor anywhere on the frame of the media player interface and click a mouse button(lets say to expand to full screen or to drop the volume) the OS crashes. Don't have this problem on my Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop, just on the desktop!

Any ideas, similar issues, work arounds?

Thanks.

Answer
dmesg
Jul 21, 2011 8:01PM PDT

When crash happens try to exit to CLI with ctrl+alt+F2 then login and enter dmesg it will print some info.
dmesg > ~/info.txt can print it to text file ~/info.txt
Give last lines here. That should help to determine what is wrong.

Also consider submitting bug to Ubuntu developers. here special page:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu
Provide them your detailed hardware info, because it is clearly hardware dependant and if your have it same output I mentioned before would be very helpful too.

As possible fix try different video drivers (on ex. for ATI there are like 3 different drivers on Linux only one might be problematic). And issues like this often come from poorly developed drivers for Linux from companies like ATI.
