Video Not Streaming

Oct 13, 2006 6:50AM PDT

I have an iBook G4 in which I have put in an additional 1 gb RAM. I have the latest 10.4.8 OS.

Problem is, when I go to a site like youtube and try and see a video, it does not stream continuously but is jerky.

This, when I am not doing anything else on the laptop.

Any hints/guidelines to help me see my videos properly?

Right! Have installed the flip4mac. Will revert after seeing if that has helped!

Yes, I should have mentioned the connection: it is a DSL Broadband thru a wireless router and the Mac Airport card. It is a 256k connection -- I think!!

Thanks

What sort of internet connection do you have?

Video's on YouTube are all encoded in Flash and should play on any machine with the Flash player installed. You obviously have this.

What is your download speed like?

I should have mentioned this the first time around: DSL Broadband 256k thru a wireless router and the Mac Airport.

Am not too sure how to check the actual download speeds!!

Download speed

should be more than fast enough for this type of video.

Is the machine doing anything else while you are attempting to watch YouTube.

Is the stuttering happening to all the movies you try to watch?

Just been to the Youtube site: as I indicated, I have already downloaded the flip4mac and installed it. Yet, the video streams for about 4 seconds, pauses for about the same time -- and that process gets repeated. The fun of watching a joke is lost by the time you are a quarter way thru!!

No, other than the fact that the computer is logged on to the net, I am not doing anything else on the computer.

There obviously something that is not coreectly selected somewhere in my system preferences or some such thing, but I can't work it out!!

If you have already done this, ignore it

that you are using Safari?

Yes, am using Safari.

Also, have now downloaded the Flash from the site recommended by you.

I have just realised something quite curious: I get various videos from friends etc in wmv or quicktime format. I have NO problem seeing those as they run on the movie software of MY computer.

Whereas, as you probably know, when you try and see a youtube video, there is a screen resident in the page that is open of youtube that streams the videos. It is ONLY these movies that do not stream well.

So, methinks that the problem is possibly nothing to do with my laptop systems but something about the download speeds!

Am I correct in my analysis?

That's a possibility

How did you get on with the Flash Player?

Well! Nothing to report, honestly!! The videos/movies were working the same way before the flash download!!

So, I can't really tell the diff yet!!

instead of going wireless,

could you, just for the sake of testing, use a wired connection?... and let us know the result of the test?

For the broadband DSL? Ah well, I doubt if i even have the cable to connect to the router!! Have always been on the Airport!

Regardless, shall get hold of the necessary cable asap and then revert!

You could well be right! But, I am one of the very original hard-core, die-before-I-switch, dyed-in-the-wool, hung-upon ye olde mac!! Have been with one since way back 1988!!

So, really, would be quite happy not to be able to see videos of youtube than switch!!

Cheers!!
