Video mpeg plays on monitor but not on data projector

I have a laptop (ASUS F3J) running XP Pro which i play powerpoint presentations (Office 2003) via an ACER data projector (xd1270d) connected via DVI or VGA cable.

Trouble is when i get to a mpeg file it plays fine on my laptop monitor but does not play on the data projector.

I found out that if i have the computer set to display image on both LCD & DVI (via Fn + F8 keys) then it will only play on laptop monitor. But if i switch to DVI only (ie laptop goes black) then the mpeg plays fine on the projector.

How can i get the mpeg files to play on both laptop and data projector without having to constantly switch between screens during my presentations?
