Video Inputs for Receivers

Can someone please tell me why Harmon Kardon receivers have video inputs on a Receiver. I am reading the instructions and the only thing i can think of is for on screen menu options. is there any advantage to hooking up my tv and dvd to my receiver. i thought I was pretty good with this techno stuff. please reply.

To the use the reciver as the switching for every thing.
My HK reciver uses the video out for the onscreen menue for setting it up.
But since it is an older one it only has video and no DVI or HDMI ins and outs. What does yours have? John
