Video Editing Effect - Zoom and Track an Object On-Screen?

Mar 2, 2010 5:12AM PST

I have searched the internet for the effect I would like to use but with no luck, possibly because I don't know what it is called. Can anybody make a suggestion?

Here's what I want to do. I did some amateur video using my Canon S3I3 of skaters at my club. I would now like to zoom in on them individually and follow them around the rink. So a skater would be moving in something of a sideways U shape from the left hand bottom corner of the screen, counter clockwise around to the right hand bottom corner, up to the right hand top corner and then to the top left hand corner.

Does anyone know if such a feature exists in video editing software? If you could supply the name of the software that would be great and it would help me to know the proper way to refer to such an effect as well.

Thanks in advance.
