Just too many. It seems to depend on what you want to convert from and to but the bottom line is that I haven't found one but have some dozen in my collection.

VIRTUAL DUB.

But you promptly run into another issue. "What is an AVI?"

An .AVI can hold some infinite different encodings so to tell a person you want an .AVI is like telling me to give you an apple. Now I have to determine what apple you want.

windows movie maker problem with mpeg files

The only reason why I want to convert to an .avi is so that it will be accepted by Windows Movie Maker. If you look at an .avi as being a composition of various encodings, I guess I would say that I want an mpeg .avi. Although WMM is a very poor program, from my findings, its been the only one that has the complexity I am searching for
[for windows]. In a couple of months, I will be switching to Ubuntu, and will begin learning Cinelarra. But in the meanwhile, I am stuck with Windows.

Your question is now pretty refined. Forgive me but I must comment that it took a few posts to get down to exactly what you were trying to do.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
