ViaTalk VOIP customer service rep told me to enable DMZ

Jun 25, 2007 5:21PM PDT

so that people receiving my calls would get better voice reception. A few people I called complained it was hard to hear me or that the reception was "broken up." A ViaTalk rep told me to enable DMZ for the IP address of the Linksys phone adapter (Model PAP2T) to correct these problems.

After doing so, I ran a Shields Up! test and it showed Port 80 open, the majority of ports closed and only a few indicating stealth. So, I disconnected the VOIP connection to the cable modem and re-ran the test, which now showed STEALTH for all ports.

There must be a way to improve VOIP voice quality without sacrificing computer security. Can anyone give me some advice on how to accomplish this?

Absolutely.

Install a firewall on your machine.

I have Kerio Personal Firewall installed on my pc.

The Shields Up! test showed Stealth for all ports with the Kerio firewall running, until after DMZ was enabled. Then, it indicated that Port 80 was open, the majority of the other ports were closed (but not stealth), and only about seven ports showed stealth.

As it should be.

The DMZ should point at the device that does the VOIP. So if you put your machine into the DMZ that that sounds incorrect.

As to port 80, what exploit is there?

Shields Up! retest indicates all ports are now Stealth.

Thanks for your help, Bob. VOIP as well as internet connection are now working fine.
