VIA OHCI FireWire "Device Cannot Start" Problem

Dec 22, 2004 7:56AM PST

I just installed a Firewire PCI port, but it does not work. I checked the device manager and found that this message:

VIA OHCI COMPLIANT IEEE 1394 "Device Can not Start"

I searched the web for a quick fix, most of the suggestions being reinstalling the PCI card and uninstalling the drivers, restarting, and then allowing windows to reinstall the drivers.

However I had no such luck with any of these suggestions. I was very excited when I bought this because I am a student and I love filming, but now this problem has arised. I have reinstalled the PCI card to different PCI ports, and I have followed the other suggestions. If anyone can help it would be well appreciated.

System:
Pentium III 933 Mhz
384 megs ram
20 gig
CD-RW
1.44 Floppy

I also installed a USB 2.0 PCI port the same night and it works fine. If anyone can help, please do! Thanks

Forget to Mention

The operating system is Windows XP Home, so it installs the drivers automatically, and the firewire PCI card did not come with any drivers.

Which XP HOME? SP1 SP2?

Its Windows XP Home Service Pack 2, i dont know anything about BIOS, and I searched that exact phrase before. I decided to come to CNET for the best help. I dont think the firewire card is dead, its brand new, I sure hope its not dead. So thank you for your continous help. Once again, I'm not sure what BIOS is.Thanks

You need one other machine.

To test that card. If you look over the google, you see someone very quickly with a dead card. You did try another slot?

About the BIOS. It's a "just above beginner" item so let's ignore it for now.

I'll give that a try

I updated the BIOS, I did a little research and succesfully updated. Yeah I noticed that too whenever I was looking over google for dead firewire cards. I have another computer which I'll give a try.

P2
500Mhz
89 Megs Ram
10 gig hard drive
CD Drive
1.44 Floppy
Windows 98

That computer may work, im not sure. I dont have any drivers for it, so hopefully it doesn't require any.
Thanks again for all of your help so far. Hopefully in the end this works.

Update
Dec 23, 2004 12:58AM PST

I installed the drivers on my Pentium 2, and now it says that the Firewire port is working properly, but I have not tested it yet. I have to find the driver for my camcorder now too. Who would have thought that all this trouble just to edit videos on your computer..hopefully in the end it will work on the P3 Windows XP SP2

Another Update
Dec 23, 2004 10:36AM PST

I couldn't get my camcorder to work because i dont have a capture driver on my P2. I searched the internet for hours but couldn't find one. If anyone knows a place to get one, please help with that.

The old system is:

P2 500htz
95 megs ram
10 gig hard drive
CD-Rom
1.44 Floppy
Windows 98SE

So I was wondering if now that that system says that device is working properly, is that proof enough to considar that the firewire card is not dead? Once again, I've updated My BIOS and the drivers for the firewire card. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. The system I was normally considaring put the firewire port on was a

P3 933 Mhz
384 megs ram
20 gig hard
CD-RW
1.44 Floppy
Windows XP Home SP2

Thank you.

And the conclusion is...

Devcon would not load, the second it was opened it closed. However, I've got good news just before christmas. I reinstalled the 1394 IEEE PCI card in PCI slot 4 and now it works. I guess updating the BIOS and everything else eventually fixed the problem.
I am very satisfied and very pleased. I would like to thank you for all of your help and suggestions. Merry Christmas and have a happy new year.
